迈向新旅程

A New Direction

categories News, Training

As for the past weeks, we were charting a new course and a new face lift. We are now called The Malaysia Uechiryū and Kosonken Kenkyūkai (馬来西亞上地流-虎尊拳研究会). We are (become) an independent body focusing in researching , studying and training of various Uechiryū and the Chinese Tiger Style boxing (虎尊拳).

Our Uechiryū training is based on old-style Uechiryū. A blend of modern styles Uechiryū will also be incorporated into our training but the old style training remains as our main focus and grading requirement.

Tiger is one of the three major animals in Uechiryū. We form a small team dedicated in researching, studying and training of Chinese Tiger Style boxing. The tiger techniques in the Chinese Tiger style have many similarities but make a good complement in various areas such as tiger claw striking, body conditioning and strengthening. Generally the strike is short and direct. There are pulls, tears, twists or presses upon contact with the adversary.

This announcement is made coinciding with the 2nd day of Chinese New Year (February 8, 2008 or 20080208) to signify the beginning of a new direction. Our first training will begin on February 11. We will incorporate more new tiger techniques along the way in stages. We wish you a Happy Chinese New Year. Enjoy your holiday and happy training.

Aim for higher standards

categories News

The preservation of the old-style Uechi-Ryu karate-do does not only rely on accurate instructions during the teaching, it requires stringent standards in training, both teaching and learning. I aim for higher standards in my kōhai so that they will always achieve a standard beyond their current rank level. I request my kōhai to demonstrate skills at Shodan level while [s]he training for Ikkyu ranking.

It is my responsibility to spread and to preserve the ancient art in Malaysia. At this time, I am already working on a kōhai to set this standard. She is preparing for her Ikkyu ranking at Shodan skill level. During the launching of Bukit Beruang Dōkōkai on Sunday, another highly potential kōhai has been identified. In fact, every kōhai are potential in my eyes. It is only a matter of how serious they take their training.

I hope all my kōhai will persevere with utmost persistency to train for setting high standards in their training and health and look beyond the capabilities they have never known before. I look forward to set Uechi-Ryu Zankai Malaysia at the highest standard in karate training in Malaysia, surpassing others.

Dōkōkai Soft Launch

categories News

Malacca: The Okinawa Karate-Do Uechi-Ryu Zankai Malaysia marked another remarkable milestone by launching Malaysia Shibu Dōkōkai or main Malaysia branch at Bukit Beruang,Melaka this morning. The Malaysia Shibu Dōkōkai is also named as Bukit Beruang Dōkōkai and led by Adrian Hoe Senpai. More than 40 people including parents and students attended the launching.

The soft launch was opened with training. All students were training with full spirit for the first time at the shibu dōkōkai. The training was followed by kyu certificates awarding ceremony for students from Jasin Shibu Dōkōkai and SMK Ayer Keroh Shibu Dōkōkai. The launch ended after the light lunch around 1PM.

A proper hierarchy, methods and system of administration were also announced this morning according to traditional Okinawa Karate-do culture. We believe Uechi-Ryu Zankai Malaysia is the only Okinawa karate-do in Malaysia to totally implement the old and proper traditional way of Okinawan karate-do dojo administration and hierarchy. Uechi-Ryu Zankai Malaysia is also the only Okinawa karate-do in Malaysia to follow the correct and true old Okinawa traditional methods of issuing kyu certificate. Uechi-Ryu Zankai Malaysia is also committed to teach old traditional training methods and to preserve Uechi-Ryu training passed down from Kanbun Uechi Sensei through Toyama Sensei and Seizan Sensei.

After explaining our traditional training methods and non-contact (non-free) sparring methods and the medical implication and the risks of sparring, parents are rest assured of their children’s health and safety in Uechi-Ryu Zankai’s training. They support Uechi-Ryu Zankai’s non-violence approach and growth-oriented traditional training methods. Parents offered help to open more classes and to recruit more students around their residence and work areas. A great start and confidence for Uechi-Ryu Zankai Malaysia!

First Grading Test

categories News

Malacca: The Okinawa Karate-do Uechi-Ryu Zankai Malaysia Dōkōkai has conducted the very first grading test on September 9, 2007. The first batch of students graded for kukyu (9th kyu) were the Little Tigers from Jasin dōkōkai.

Three Little Tigers with hatchi-kyu (8th kyu) from previous style had qualified for Uechi-Ryu Zankai ku-kyu (9th kyu). Under the new system, all previously qualified students have to re-qualify up to the kyu level they are holding now. The re-qualification is important as Uechi-Ryu is a completely different system from conventional modern karate.

The grading test was conducted by Adrian Hoe Senpai who had undergone a month-long sabbatical training on Okinawa under the supervision of Seizan Sensei, hatchi-dan (8th-dan) kyoshi to-dan. Seizan Sensei is a very close and high ranking student of Toyama Sensei, ju-dan (10th dan) hanshi. Seizan Sensei is responsible to train all overseas students and to supervise all overseas dojo and dōkōkai.

This grading test also signifies the transition to Uechi-Ryu Zankai has been completed. Most of the students were from previous style under the training of Adrian Hoe Senpai. Adrian has done extensive research into various karate styles and the different system of Uechi-Ryu. He finds that Uechi-Ryu Zankai practices the pre-World-War-2 old style karate-do which still has very strong Chinese influence.

“The system is not violent as it does not practice jiyu kumite. The system uses a more gentle and traditional approach of ancient martial arts training to build and strengthen the body and health of the practitioners.”, says Adrian.

“Jiyu kumite adds, to the dull and monotonous training, spices and excitement as well as the personal and group glorification when one wins in a competition. Injuries sustained from jiyu kumite may be bad for health as the injuries will damage muscle, tissue and nerve fibers. The effect will not be immediately felt but it will eventually surface when one enters old age.”, iterates Adrian. “Uechi-Ryu Zankai builds a person very slowly and gently and the strengthening effect will not be seen as immediately as sports karate but the health and strength obtained from this old style training will stay until the old age. The health benefits of Uechi-Ryu Zankai training is notably important as we can see the 80-year-old Toyama Sensei is still training and performing like a young man.”, added Adrian.

“The Little Tigers at Jasin Shibu Dōkōkai have trained very hard and I am pleased to see their performance and I am very happy that our students are now practicing 100% Uechi-Ryu Zankai techniques as we have completed the transition.”, says Adrian.

“Unlike the public performance on June 10 at Mahkota Parade (article here), we are now confident and ready to give any performance using 100% Uechi-Ryu Zankai techniques from now on.”, again says Adrian.

The next grading test will be held in October for Bukit Beruang dōkōkai students. Another grading test will be held in November or December for those who are holding higher qualification from previous style to allow them to move up to the equivalent kyu level they are holding.

Training at Zakimi Dojo

categories Kata, News, Training

Adrian Senpai and students from Nagahama Shibu Dojo performed together for Toyama Sensei (Judan Hanshi) in Shubukan (修武館) Dojo at Zakimi.

Adrian Senpai is the first Malaysian to visit Uechi-Ryu Zankai’s Honbu Dojo at Zakimi. He was thrilled by his visit and saw for himself his own eyes a typical traditional Okinawan karate-do dojo and the legendary Toyama Seiko Sensei, Judan (10th dan) Hanshi.

This is Adrian’s second visit to Zakimi dojo during his first visit to Okinawa. His performance also received approval from Toyama Sensei to bring Uechi-Ryu Zankai knowledge back to Malaysia and spread and preserve the ancient arts of Uechi-Ryu empty hand.
